Benue’s elected local government council officials held a peaceful march on Thursday to protest what they called the governor’s unconstitutional suspension from office.
the Benue State House of Assembly’s June recommendation to suspend the 23 local government chairmen and their councilors.
Suspended vice chairman of Makurdi LGA, Mr. Frank Mbashinya, led the protesting local government officials who promised not to accept their suspension.
Because the government had already been ordered to reinstate them by both the National Industrial Court and the high court, they were contesting their ‘illegal’ suspension.
They wanted the governor to immediately comply with the various court rulings ordering their reinstatement and the restoration of their pay and benefits.
The state police commissioner, who stepped in to diffuse the situation, said he would relay the protesters’ concerns to the governor.
A councilman who had traveled to Gboko to join the demonstration was reported killed in a car crash on the way back.
