The recent armed robbery in Otukpo, Benue, which resulted in the deaths of some police officers, has prompted the House to decide to launch an investigation into the incident.
On Tuesday, the plenary voted in favor of a motion of urgent public interest brought up by Blessing Onuh (PDP, Benye).
Onuh, who put out the motion, argued that the protection and well-being of the populace should be the government’s top priority.
On October 20, what seemed to be around twenty armed gang members assaulted the quiet town of Otukpo in Benue State.
She claimed the group besieged the area for nearly two hours as they used rocket launchers, dynamite, and AK-47s to cause widespread destruction.
She claimed that the attackers struck first at the vigilance group, the nation’s initial defense.
She claimed they went to the Otukpo police station, where they killed the DPO and three female cops.
“While the assault on the police station was going on, other members of the gang were busy assaulting four commercial banks at the same time, killing people, and making off with enormous sums of money.
“IBTC, Zenith, UBA, and First Bank are among the targeted financial institutions. She emphasized that many people had been shot and died in the bank and that the community had been traumatized by the attack because they still felt dangerous long after it had ended.
The House voted overwhelmingly to condemn the heist and the resulting death, and to request that the police, DSS, and other security authorities investigate and bring those responsible to justice.
The House also demanded that the government immediately send in more security personnel to protect the town and the surrounding area from a repeat of the tragedy.
