On Sunday, March 3, the Lagos State Government sent a four-day notice of relocation to all squatters living in illegal shanties near the Lagos coastal route in the Lekki neighborhood of Mayegun.

On Monday, March 4, the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed this in a post via his X Twitter.

Squatters and unlawful shanties beside Regional Road Alignment, he said, have to leave the area by Thursday afternoon.

The article says, “The Lagos State Government on Sunday issued a four-day relocation notice to all squatters occupying illegal shanties around the Lagos coastal road in the Mayegun, Lekki area of Lagos, following the indiscriminate springing up of shanties and illegal structures.”

During an inspection tour to Jakande, Elegushi itedo, System 156, and 44 on Orchid Road, HC MOE&WR, Tokunbo Wahab spoke with newsmen and stated that all squatters and unlawful shanties around the Regional Road Alignment must leave by Thursday afternoon.

He issued a warning that since all properties had received mandatory notifications, failure to evacuate will bring law enforcement officials starting in the wee hours of Friday morning.

The Agege Red rail line, Obalende, Apongbon, and Ijora underbridges have all been approved by the government.

“I would like to point out that the majority of the cleaned places were known for harboring criminals and posing a risk to the safety of the locals.

The enforcement campaign is a statewide effort, and the team would also visit Aboru, Command, Abule-Egba to inspect current work in the areas.

“Since then, they have not seen commitment from the affected community members,” the government stated in a series of stakeholder meetings with property owners and affected people who received violation notifications in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The team also went to Ilubirin to check on the status of the project, which was awarded three years ago, to install an underground tank to deflood Lagos Island. The contractor confirmed that the project would be completed in ninety days. Ilubirin is strategically important because, in order to revitalize Isale Eko and its surroundings, the government must get water out of the area via the Ilubirin path, the author noted.
