A group of Igbo lawyers in Lagos called “Otu Oka-Iwu Nigeria” has called on the governors of the South-East to work together to solve the problem of the weekly stay-at-home day.
Mazi Okechukwu Unegbu, the organization’s president, issued the call at the organization’s first news conference on Tuesday in Lagos.
According to Unegbu, the governors of Igboland need to collaborate in order to find solutions to the economic problems caused by the sit-in.
“The Monday stay-in-doors dilemma has become the norm in Igboland, where residents think they cannot trust their own safety if they venture out.
The administration, which promised to safeguard its citizens during the election campaign, now seems to have abandoned them. This platform is being used to appeal to the government for assistance in Igboland.
He also expressed concern about the national security threat, which is having a particularly negative impact on Igboland’s development and the South-East’s overall economic prospects.
No one, young or old, is safe in the current state of Igboland. Central and regional governments alike are tasked with protecting citizens’ lives and belongings.
“It breaks our hearts to see the Igboland economy being deliberately destroyed. From the Onitsha-Nnewi axis to the Aba-Orlu axis, Igboland has always been a hub of activity.
There is no new chapter to be written, and as a result, our economy has become listless and lifeless.
When young people in our communities once again confront nature to a wrestling match for ideas, they will emerge victorious. “We must all do something to bring back those days of old.”
Before it’s too late, we need to reevaluate our approach and figure out where we went wrong.
We are a group that supports Nigerian national unity. Unegbu remarked, “We have nowhere else to call home.”
He also lamented the decline of education in the area, recalling a time when Igboland was a center of learning.
It’s worrying that kids in Igboland nowadays don’t seem to care about school as much as they used to.
As one historian puts it, “back in the day, it was almost a race to see which state would top the WAEC rankings of states after the exams.
What we’re hearing today is that our kids aren’t interested in school or that they want to scam their way to riches.
Before things grow much worse, Unegbu stated, “we call on the governments in Igboland to take action to reverse this unwholesome method.”
