The Nigeria Customs Service, or NCS, Adamawa/Taraba Area Command, has documented 15 instances of the seizure of various illicit products totaling N13, 352,100 in duty-paid value.
Since the beginning of last month, the operations that resulted in the seizures have been conducted.
16,675 liters of gasoline packed in 643×25L Jerry cans and three × 200L drums, 20×50kg bags of imported parboiled rice, and a used Volkswagen Golf with a large rebuilt fuel tank are among the confiscated items.
Salisu Kazaure Abdullahi, the NCS’s Adamawa/Taraba Area Controller, told reporters about the seizures and said that even after fuel subsidies were removed, the country’s fuel products were still being smuggled out.
The local Customs controller said, “This is due to high fuel demand and high prices in neighboring countries like Cameroon, Togo, and Benin Republic.”
He claimed that the petroleum smuggling syndicates are resourceful and obstinate, and that they will stop at nothing to keep up their illegal enterprise because they profit handsomely from smuggling the product out of the nation.
But he gave reassurance that the NCS is constantly evaluating its tactics and taking tough measures against the smugglers.
He declared, “We want to make it clear to the smugglers that the more they change their methods, the more we adjust our own and that the truth will always win out over lies.”
