Hamari Traore, the captain of Mali, was found guilty of unsportsmanlike behavior towards the referee and was given a four-match ban.
The 32-year-old defender was dismissed immediately after the final whistle at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after his team lost to Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals on February 3.
The Eagles fell 2-1 in overtime, and Traore had to be hauled away by teammates when he and Egyptian referee Mohamed Adel got into a physical altercation. It was evident that the players were pushing each other.
He gets a one-year suspension of half of his penalty.
The football federation of Mali was fined $10,000 for the unsportsmanlike conduct of its players toward a match referee, and the federation of Ivory Coast was fined $5,000 for the misbehavior of the Elephants.
Senegalese player Krepin Diatta, meantime, has been barred and fined for disparaging the Confederation of African Football with remarks he made following the Teranga Lions’ penalty-filled loss to Ivory Coast in the round of 16.
