Center for Maternal and Fetal Health Opened at RSUTH

The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital is home to one of Nigeria’s few obstetrics and gynecology departments, and its new Foetomaternal Medicine Unit is a first for the state.

The hospital’s management said in a statement released to the media that the new maternity ward represents a major step forward in providing cutting-edge medical care to mothers and their unborn children at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.

On October 20, 2023, a groundbreaking ceremony took place to inaugurate the Foetomaternal Medicine Unit, which would change the face of obstetrics in the region by treating all of the complications that can arise during pregnancy.

Professor Chinzindu Alikor, the Acting Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, is very enthusiastic about the new Foetomaternal Medicine unit, saying that it will be a center of excellence in Nigeria, where resident doctors will be trained and where significant research will be conducted.

Prof. Alikor applauded Gov. Siminalayi Fubara for his unwavering dedication to bettering the state of healthcare in Rivers.

The CMD has announced that Professor Mkpe Abbey, an internationally recognized expert in foetomaternal medicine and community obstetrics, will head the new department.
