Nigerian musicians rule the international stage

Without a doubt, Nigerian music is taking over the world and is blasting in clubs, stadiums, and other public spaces.

It gained popularity as a result of musicians like Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Asake, Tems, Tiwa Savage, and others earning praise for their work on a global scale.

The size of the nation’s population and the availability of music streaming platforms like Boomplay, iTunes, Spotify, etc. have both been cited as contributing factors to these singers’ success.

According to Data Reporter’s statistics from 2023, Nigeria now has a total population of 221.2 million people, with 122.5 million of them using the internet.

Internet penetration was 55.4 percent at the time.

Early in 2023, there were 193.9 million active mobile phone connections in Nigeria, which represents 87.7% of the country’s entire population.

The ease with which Nigerian artists may now connect with audiences throughout the globe has improved their prospects of success.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Professor Umar Danbatta, remarked that the Nigerian entertainment sector has expanded internationally as a result of strong reliance on digital platforms.

Following the advent of Spotify, Nigerians created 1.3 million playlists in a single year.

Nigerian singers have an advantage over those from less populous nations thanks to the enormous growth of music streaming, which allows Nigerian music to flourish both domestically and internationally.

From the UK to the US and other countries, the industry has emerged as a dominant musical force.

Popular Nigerian singers who have gained widespread recognition by winning multiple accolades and working with other international artists have significantly contributed to this trend.

Burna Boy

On June 3rd 2023, Grammy-winning musician Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, also known by his stage name Burna Boy, created history by selling out the 80 000-seat London Stadium.

The Nigerian musician made history by becoming the first African performer to sell out the UK’s 80K-seat London Stadium.

Tems

Remember how Tems won the Best Melodic Rap Performance Grammy at the 65th Grammy Awards on February 6, 2023? She received the honor for her contribution to Drake and Future’s song “Wait For U.”

Wizkid

Wizkid, a Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter, is unquestionably one of the music stars making Nigeria proud on the international music arena.

In an interview with twiscoloaded, public commentator Remi Adebayo stated that good music is necessary for success on a worldwide scale, even with minimal or no promotion.

“Nigerian artists were able to rule the world because they produced excellent music that anybody could appreciate. They are successful on a global scale because of this.

Additionally, the proportion of Nigerians with internet access provides them the ability to reverberate and trend internationally on websites like TikTok and Twitter.

TikTok is the newest music discovery platform, making it simple for Nigerian music to sample the worldwide market, according to him.
