Nigerians have been congratulated by the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) on the commemoration of Democracy Day in 2023.
In a statement released in Abuja by his Head of Media and Strategic Communications, Fidelis Onakpoma, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, Head of the IHRC’s Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria, said Nigerians should celebrate 2023 Democracy Day by working together to create open, receptive, and accountable institutions and processes that guarantee everyone has the chance to participate and have a voice in how they will be governed.
According to Duru, nations with democratic freedoms have higher levels of prosperity, serenity, and stability, and their residents can exercise their fundamental rights.
We implore President Tinubu to integrate democracy and the rule of law with a focus on promoting and strengthening human rights, access to justice, and accountable, transparent governance that meets the needs and preferences of the general public. Democratic governance and human rights are essential elements of sustainable development and lasting peace.
“We have given some nations vital assistance, which has included boosting democratic and institutional resilience in the Chad Republic, Sierra Leone, Ukraine, and other African and European countries. We shall keep promoting democracy in light of this fact. We shall continue to act as a community, bringing together institutions of power, businesses, and groups of people that support democracy.
“As we observe Democracy Day this year, it is crucial that we remember all those who sacrificed their lives in the fight to overthrow the military dictatorship and establish democracy in the nation. They are the protectors of our democracy, and I pray that the sacrifices they have made will not go in vain.
“I pray that God will continue to bless our beloved country, as we continue to march forward in our Democratic journey,” the message said.
