NUT calls for elementary school teachers to resume strike in FCT January 15

Elementary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory are being told to go back on strike by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory Wing, on January 15.

The union’s emergency meeting of the State Wing Standing Committee (SWSC), which took place in Abuja on Friday, concluded with the issuance of a communiqué that carried the directive.

Mr. Abdullahi Shafas, the chairman of the state, Ms. Margaret Jethro, the secretary, and Mr. Ibukun Adekeye, the secretary of state publicity, all signed the communiqué.

As of January 22, the union has threatened that secondary school teachers will also go on strike if their demands are not fulfilled by January 19, 2024, as stated by the union representatives.

Think back to September of last year, when primary school teachers went on an indefinite strike over, among other things, the failure to pay 25 months’ worth of minimum wage arrears and the non-application of a 40 percent Peculiar Allowance.

But after the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike intervened, the strike was halted for six weeks so that the issues could be resolved.

In addition, Wike appointed a six-person team to investigate the problems and provide recommendations.

Despite the committee’s report being filed, the instructors are now concerned that six weeks have passed with little progress made.

Teachers’ suffering and the failure to pay the aforementioned entitlements have left the SWSC with no choice but to order a return to the suspended strike by all primary school teachers in the FCT.

Starting Monday, January 15th, until further notice, the union is ordering all primary school teachers in the FCT to restart the strike action that had been suspended.

“The NUT urges parents to ensure the safety of their children and wards in primary schools at home,” the union stated.
