Petit names the manager who should succeed Pochettino at Chelsea

Former France midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso would be an ideal alternative for Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea.

Pochettino has come under fire at Stamford Bridge after a disappointing first season in command.

Petit believes that Alonso, who has been extensively connected with the Liverpool post, is a better fit for the Blues.

Alonso has led Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga standings, where they are currently five points ahead of Bayern Munich.

Petit told Betway: “I believe Chelsea needs a good manager with a vision, similar to what [Mikel] Arteta had for Arsenal.

“But they need to give him time to do what he wants with the players.”

“Mourinho is available, so he may be an alternative. But he is not my preference; there are new managers who are doing excellent work.

“I’m thinking of Xabi Alonso, for example; I’ve been really impressed with his work in Germany, but there are many fantastic managers available.

“Mourinho may be a candidate; he’s had success at the club, but we’re all aware that he brings drama.

“I’m not sure that is what Chelsea needs. They require a calm presence and continuity at the club.”
