The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its dedication to reducing youth tobacco use

The Nigerian federal government has stated again that it will work to reduce youth tobacco consumption.

On Friday, Ms. Bintou Camara, Regional Director, Tobacco Control Programme (AFRO) Campaign for Tobacco – Free Kids, made a courtesy call to the office of Minister of Youth and Development Jamila Ibrahim in Abuja.

Ibrahim was adamant that youth tobacco use was one of Nigeria’s most pressing problems.

In order to educate Nigerians about the dangers of tobacco use, the minister said the government should work with other groups.

We’re going to make teenage health a top priority. It’s the spot where we need to take the initiative to set up preventative measures against youth tobacco use.

She emphasized the need of complying with the law that prohibits smoking in public places to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke.

The WHO reported a few months ago that over 30,000 Nigerians each year die from tobacco-related illnesses.
