Twenty-two people drown when their boat sank in Niger

Somewhere between Kasabu village in Agwara Local Government Area, Niger State, and Yauri, Kebbi State, a boat carrying around 22 people sank.

This was reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Monday, as said by Alhaji Salihu Garba, the directing general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).

He said the agency had learned of the boating incident between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Monday.

A survivor of the accident told him there are roughly 22 people on the boat.

He said that the local divers and boat owners were working with the agency’s desk officer in Agwara to conduct rescue operations.

He further mentioned that the accident occurred on Yauri market day and that no passengers had been found as of yet.

Garba further mentioned that after the market, families would be able to report any missing members.

He said that a person who has drowned has around 24 hours until they float to the surface.

He concluded that water hyacinth and high waves were to blame for the tragedy.
