Union wants apologies from EFCC for arrest of OAU students

After 69 of their classmates were arrested in a dawn search outside university hostels on Wednesday, students at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to apologize.

The university’s student government has confirmed that those detained were indeed enrolled there.

According to TWISCOLOADED,  the students who had been arrested were taken from Ile-Ife to the commission’s Zonal Office in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

58 students were released after a protest by students who stormed the zonal headquarters of the anti-graft agency in Iyaganku, Ibadan on Wednesday and the intervention of the university’s management.

The release of the students was also confirmed by Abiodun Olanrewaju, the OAU Spokesperson.

We were given access to 58 of the students. The remaining eleven have some explaining to do.

Abbas Ojo, the union’s president, Akinboni Opeyemi, the union’s secretary general, and Omisore Elijah, the union’s public relations officer, issued a statement on Thursday demanding that the EFCC clear their members’ identities.

A release for the remaining 11 students was also mentioned by the student unionists.

Along with the call for our students’ release, union officials are working closely with attorneys to ensure that Great Ife students are safe both on and off campus from the decadent actions of these ignorant law enforcement agencies.

“We also demand that the EFCC tenders a public release clearing the names of the unlawfully incarcerated (students) of the unfounded allegations published on their media handles and broadcast to the whole country, after the earlier published posts had already been pulled down across all their social media platforms,” the petition reads.

Omisore, the union’s public relations officer, elaborated, saying, “We want the EFCC to apologize and clear the names of the students.”
