Mohammed Umar Abba, Commissioner of Police, Osun Command, has issued a warning to hunters and the public not to use weapons.

Abba said that the Command was forced to act because it was necessary to follow the regulations of the hunting excursion, but he also warned that such an unwholesome act of neglect would not be punished lightly.

This caution was issued by the head of Osun Police in a statement that the Command’s spokeswoman, Opalola Yemisi, signed.

Umar also disclosed that the warning became necessary as a result of the frequent incidents of firearms misfiring or accidentally releasing their charge, which have resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

“The Osun State Police Command is constrained to caution/sensitize members of the public, especially hunters, on the use of gun for hunting as the Command is confronted with incessant cases of accidental discharge or misfiring of gun, which on several occasions has led to the death of human beings and various degree of injuries sustained,” the statement reads.

“The Police Command is warning hunters on the need to follow the rule(s) of hunting expeditions through the use of this medium.”

The Command also cautioned hunters against keeping loaded firearms inside their dwellings since kids or other curious parties might be persuaded to play with them or test their curiosity.

“They should also refrain from loading their firearms in populated areas to lessen the risk of an unintentional discharge, which poses a serious threat to human life.”
