The Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), whose mission is to advance democracy and good governance in the nation, has advocated for a credible and transparent election of the Senate and House of Representatives presiding officers during the upcoming inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.

The 10th National Assembly will be inaugurated this week, according to a declaration that President Bola Tinubu is anticipated to make.

“There is a need for elected legislators to be able to choose their presiding and principal officers in line with the principles of separation of powers and devoid of interference by the executive arm or intimidation, harassment, or even the use of state machinery,” PLAC stated in a statement released on Tuesday.

A democratic and inclusive legislative process is important for promoting national development, accountability, and the defense of citizens’ rights, according to PLAC.

“It is essential that the election of the President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, their deputies, and other principal officers of the National Assembly be conducted in a manner that upholds the principles of fairness and respect for the decisions made by elected representatives,” the statement continues.

“Legislators should be allowed to utilize their right to vote and freedom under the constitution to choose leaders who will successfully serve their interests and that of the Nigerian people.

“Anything that compromises the independence and integrity of the legislature should not be allowed in the electoral process.”

The PLAC reaffirmed its support for more female engagement and representation in politics.

“At least half of Nigeria’s population are women, and their viewpoints and experiences are crucial in creating laws and policies.

According to the statement, “We are urging the 10th National Assembly to provide women with a fair opportunity to rise to major officer posts, as this will assure gender representation in the National Assembly.

In addition, PLAC reaffirmed its dedication to advancing a strong and accountable national legislative and safeguarding democratic principles.
