Muslims should keep an eye out for the new moon of Dhul-Hijjah 1444 AH starting on Sunday, according to Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA.

The 12th and last month in the Islamic calendar in which Muslims conduct the yearly pilgrimage (Hajj) and celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir holiday is Dhul-Hijjah, according to a statement signed by Prof. Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto.

The message read, “This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that the new moon of Dhul-Hijjah 1444 AH shall be visible on Sunday, June 18, which is equivalent to the 29th day of Dhul-Qadah.”

Muslims are urged to begin observing the new moon on Sunday and notify the closest district or village head of their sightings so that the Sultan can be informed.

The declaration pleaded with Allah to support all Muslims in carrying out their religious obligations.
