A group operating under the auspices of The Natives has lobbied against the election of a second Muslim as the next Senate President ahead of the June 13 convocation of the 10th National Assembly.
During a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, the group’s leader, Smart Edwards, urged senators-elect from all political backgrounds to learn from President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in order to advance peace, guarantee inclusion, and foster national unity that would endear the parliament to the Nigerian people.
He asked the incoming senators to distance themselves from any political, financial, or offensive strategy or action that would support a Muslim candidate for the Senate President.
“We cannot play around with the expensive acts that risk dividing the populace after elections,” Edwards added. We persuade the 10th Assembly to distance itself from any political, financial, or insensitive strategy or behavior that will support a Muslim for the Office of Senate President since this is an example of national sabotage, even though it is politically acceptable to do so.
No group at all should be seen fanning the flags of dissension in the guise of building a war chest, he added, in light of the numerous disruptions and carryover of pre-election hatred, resistance, and echoes from the populace.
In order to do this, the group pleaded with Senator Abdulaziz Yari to abandon this goal and take the lead.
Sen. Godswill Akpabio and Barau’s ticket, it continued, “represents consideration of the country’s mood, an evidence of healing rather than the brazen display of strength or the coronation of religious dominance.”
The organization urged both new and re-elected lawmakers to endorse the selection of Senator Jibrin Barau and Representative Akpabio, as approved by the ruling APC.
