Prior to the Edo State gubernatorial election, the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, on Friday asked political parties to adhere to the deadline for candidate nomination.

According to twiscoloaded, the Edo governorship is scheduled for September 21, 2024.

In a statement, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee Sam Olumekun stated that, in accordance with the timeline and schedule of events for the Edo governorship election, political parties’ deadline for holding primaries ended on February 24, 2024.

He mentioned that political parties were to submit their nomination forms as the next action.

He said that in order to “assist political parties to ensure seamless nominations,” the Commission was planning to provide two Liaison Officers from each party with refresher training.

The training takes place at the Media Center, INEC Headquarters in Abuja, and runs from Friday, March 1, 2024, to Monday, March 4, 2024.

“During the candidate nomination period, the Media Center will also function as the Help Desk in the event that any political party requires assistance.”

Olumekun issued a warning, saying that political parties would not be given any further time by the Commission to upload the nomination papers of more than two candidates each.

“The Commission would like to bring to the attention of Political parties that only two nomination forms per party—the running mate and governorship candidate—can be uploaded in 20 days.

Therefore, there is no justification for requesting a time extension, and none will be granted past Sunday, March 24, 2024.

The statement went on, “Political parties should ensure strict compliance with the timelines.”
