Jigawa State Government’s Justification for Forming a Brand New OGP Steering Committee

Due to years of inactivity, the Jigawa State Government has announced the establishment of a new state steering committee to develop an Open Governance Partnership (OGP).

At a workshop in Dutse aimed at bolstering the OGP structure in Jigawa State, the state’s commissioner for budget and economic planning, Babangida Umar Gantsa, made this announcement.

He explained that their goals are to reevaluate the action plan, bolster OGP’s initiatives, and bring civil society groups in the state into harmony.

He went on to describe the Open Governance Partnership (OGP) as a worldwide initiative to which Nigeria and many states within the Federation have committed.

His words: “The governor is an architect of openness, inclusion, and transparency and we have approached him based on his commitment and desire to see that Jigawa state excel in all aspects, so he gave his commitment to go ahead and do the needful.”

He mentioned that Aminu Danmalam, together with other state and non-state players, serves as co-chairman of the new OGP state steering committee.

The current administration’s 12-point program will be more easily accomplished with the help of the committee, he said, and the state’s status as a leader in fiscal discipline, openness, and accountability will be preserved.

The Open Governance Partnership (OGP) is a global initiative that promotes transparency, citizen participation, and accountability in government, and in July 2016, Nigeria became the 70th member country, according to Gloria K. Ahmed, the National Coordinator of OGP, who was represented by Hajia Ramatu Bello from the Federal Ministry of Budget.

She noted that only 11 of the 36 states had not yet joined the OGP, despite ongoing efforts to recruit them.
