Reno Omokri, a public affairs journalist, claimed that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) had any moral justification for calling a statewide strike in protest of President Bola Tinubu’s revocation of the fuel subsidy.
According to the twiscoloaded, the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, had stated that if the President refused to return to the status quo, there would be a nationwide strike beginning on Wednesday.
However, Omokri argued that an NLC that had previously endorsed Peter Obi of the Labour Party could not call for a strike in protest of a measure that Obi had pledged to put into place if elected.
President Tinubu has refused to reverse the removal of fuel subsidies, which is exactly what Peter Obi promised he would do as soon as he was sworn in, the speaker said. “You cannot have a Nigerian Labour Congress whose executive members endorsed Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential candidate, asking Nigerians to go on strike.”
Omokri contends that the NLC’s leaders must first rid themselves of the National Executive Council members who supported Obi’s bid for the presidency.
This, according to Omokri, became necessary in order to prevent Peter Obi’s political campaign from being associated with the upcoming national strike.
“The NLC should first rid itself of the members of its National Executive Council who supported Peter Obi if it hopes to gain enough credibility to persuade Nigerians to support their strike. This planned statewide protest will appear to be a continuation of Peter Obi’s political campaign until they accomplish that, he said.
