Boko Haram terrorists storm a Yobe Customs office, killing an employee

An office of the Nigeria Customs Service was reportedly stormed by suspected Boko Haram rebels in Geidam town, Geidam LGA, Yobe State, killing one operative named Usman Gombe.

A report claims that at around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, rebels driving a Volkswagen Golf and a Land Rover rushed the Customs office along Maine Soroa Road and opened fire.

After the Customs officers had gone home, they pounced. Officers ran for cover as shots rang out, some making it past the gate and others climbing the fence.

“Unfortunately, one of the officers, Usman Gombe, was shot dead while attempting to climb the fence,” the security source informed Daily Trust.

The Customs van, a generator, and part of the office structure, he said, were all destroyed by fire.

The Boko Haram insurgents have already murdered Customs officers twice. Last month, rebels kidnapped and murdered an officer named Babalola and his subordinate officer, according to the source.

Insurgents from the group Boko Haram have been more active on the outskirts of Geidam, according to reports from locals.

A few kilometers outside of town, they tax farmers and herders with no one stopping them.

Instead, the security personnel have established over seventeen checkpoints within the city itself, taxing merchants who carried items into town via the same method. One of the merchants complained, “We are in difficult condition in this town.”
