Court to rule on preliminary objection submitted by IGP in Ehie v. Police

On February 27, 2024, a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt will rule on the preliminary objection that the Inspector General of Police and the Rivers State Commissioner of Police filed, contesting the State High Court’s jurisdiction to hear the fundamental rights lawsuit that the Chief of Staff of the Rivers State Government, Edison Ehie, filed.

Following the arguments made by the attorneys for both sides in the lawsuit, presiding judge Justice Sika Aprioku stated that the decision made on the preliminary objection will dictate whether or not the court will hear the applicant’s substantive suit.

Based on a petition filed by the Martins Amaewhule-led lawmakers, the court granted Demain Okoro’s ex parte request to prevent the police from detaining, arresting, and harassing Ehie regarding his alleged involvement in the explosion that rocked the Rivers State House of Assembly complex on October 29, 2023.
