Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Assistant Inspector-General of Police (Idowu Owohunwa), of Ikoyi, Lagos, has emphasized that police must not hold suspects for longer than the authorized time.

On Friday, while visiting the Police Special Fraud Unit—one of the police formations under his supervision—, Owohunwa made this statement. In order to determine the quantity and state of the prisoners, he examined each cell.

Owohunwa felt uneasy with the amount of days some of the suspects had spent in the SFU cell after the inspection and interaction with them, according to a statement released on Friday by the department’s spokesperson, ASP Aminat Mayegun.

As a result, he warned the unit’s commanding Commissioner of Police against going beyond the allotted time in custody.

Owohunwa stressed the need for constant cell surveillance in order to forestall acts of violence perpetrated by inmates.

His visit, the AIG emphasized, should serve as a reminder to police personnel to provide humane treatment and the basic rights of those in detention, highlighting the significance of protecting the rights of residents in custody.

Owohunwa emphasized the need of sectional heads taking initiative by regularly visiting their respective cells to promote justice and uphold human rights.
