Nigerian lawmakers rule out making WAEC and UTME tuition-free because “we cannot afford it

A bill that would have mandated that all Nigerians take their high school exit exam for free in 2023/2024 was shot down by the House of Representatives.

Anamero Dekeri proposed making this academic session’s administrations of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Examination Council (NEC), and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) free, but the lawmakers voted it down.

This proposal is being made at a time when Nigerians are still angry with lawmakers for spending billions on luxury cars.

Dekeri said in the motion that the government should help poor families because it had saved money by eliminating the petroleum subsidy.

The senator advocated for free testing to be implemented by the Ministry of Education.

For the sake of the ordinary man, Dekeri asks that the Ministry of Education make registration for the WAEC, NECO, and JAMB examinations in 2023 and 2024 free.

After the motion was presented, there was strong opposition from lawmakers.

The amendment was proposed by the Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, who argued that lawmakers should pay for the free checkup. Ado Doguwa, however, argued against the proposal by noting that the costs are already been paid by the members.

Awaji Abiante finally filed a motion for the House to step it down after a lengthy debate, and it was approved without dissent.
