Sharafadeen Alli, chairman of the Senate committee investigating the work of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

Sharafadeen Alli, chairman of the Senate committee investigating the work of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged all parties involved to foster an atmosphere where journalists may do their jobs without fear of retaliation.

Senator representing Oyo South for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alli, made the statement in a message delivered in honor of November 2nd, which is International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

In a statement released to TWISCOLOADED on Thursday, the legislator, through his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Akeem Abas, emphasized the need of creating an atmosphere where journalists may do their jobs without fear of retaliation.

He went on to say that a free press was crucial to maintaining democracy and fostering an open society.

Alli expressed disappointment that journalists all across the world still had to deal with everyday threats, intimidation, and violence from both state and non-state actors.

He was sorry that so many obstacles stood in the way of journalists doing their jobs.

Alli stated, “It is critical that we highlight the essential role that journalists play in society as we observe the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.

Disappointingly, threats, intimidation, and violence against journalists persist around the world, impeding their ability to do their jobs without fear. Let us use this day to renew our pledge to defend the rights of journalists and all those who contribute to society.

Journalists who gave their life for the public good are being remembered and honored today. The risks that newscasters take are brought home to us in a very real way by their sacrifice.

It is our duty as legislators to pass and strictly implement legislation protecting the freedom of the press and ending impunity. To do so, we must fortify laws that guarantee the protection of journalists and preserve the right to a free press. The investigation and prosecution of those guilty for crimes against journalists must be a top priority.
