In Nkata Ibeku, Abia State, flood control operations have commenced

In order to prevent additional damage to the Umumukwu Nkata Ibeku hamlet in Umuahia North LGA, the administration of Abia State has started building a flood control system.

Parts of the road surrounding the site would be reclaimed from erosion as part of the project to address the area’s perennial floods.

During previous rainy seasons, the flood menace area—also known as the Danger zone by some indigenous people and other Nkata residents—lost lives, including children who were sent on errands, and destroyed buildings and economic trees.

The drainage system that had been built by the community to contain the threat had also become weak from the water stream.

Reporters spoke with Mr. Steven Ibeabuchi and Mrs. Josephine Chigere, two locals of Umumukwu Nkata, who said that the erosion site had killed both locals and visitors. They were relieved, though, that the Abia State government had come to their rescue.

Reconstruction of the Dozie Way and Umuafai-Lodu roads in Umuahia, which were devastated by the flood, has been initiated by the state administration
