Gombe State’s governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has pardoned 39 convicts serving different prison terms in the state’s prisons.

As part of the festivities to welcome in the new year, Yahaya made the announcement in a statewide broadcast to the residents of Gombe on Monday.

Keeping with the New Year’s spirit and offering the prisoners a chance to improve themselves, he explained, the gesture was done.

“I have granted clemency to 39 convicted inmates in our custodial centres based on the recommendation of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, in the spirit of the new year,” he announced.

Thirteen of the convicts had their sentences reduced, while 26 of them will receive unconditional pardons.

“We hope that the recipients will make the most of this chance for a new beginning and turn a new leaf.”
